Leslie Jane Naturals recommends that you talk with your doctor before using products with essential oils, especially if you are currently being treated, have any health issues, are pregnant or lactating, or are under 11 years of age.  Essential oils are not appropriate for all ages and may cause harm to you, your family, or your pets if used incorrectly.  LJN products have not been evaluated by the FDA and are not intended to diagnose, cure, or prevent disease.
  • LJN offers three formulations of Herbal Insect Repellent as not all essential oils are kid safe and those that are kid safe require different dilution rates depending on age and what oil is being used.
    • Children are more sensitive in general to aromas and more receptive to the therapeutic use of essential oils.
    • Young children's immune systems have not fully developed and they are overall less able to deal with adverse effects when concentrated essential oils are used in the air around them (diffusion) or on them.
      • Peppermint, eucalyptus and certain chemotypes of rosemary contain high amounts of menthol or 1,8-cineole which can cause slowed respiration in some children.  Because of this, industry experts recommended that peppermint not be diffused around or applied to the skin of children under the age of 6, and eucalyptus is to be avoided on or around children under age 10.
      • Additionally, the skin of infants and children is much thinner and more sensitive than adult skin.  Essential oils, being highly concentrated, should be used with great caution on the skin of children under age 2.  Newborns, in particular, are less able to deal with any adverse effects due to the over-use of improperly diluted essential oils.
        • Selecting products that are properly diluted can provide a measure of safety against topical irritation, sensitivity, photosensitivity and sensitization.  Using properly diluted products is also important to avoid systemic toxicity, such as fetotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, and neurotoxicity.  Adverse skin reactions are obvious when they happen, but systemic toxicities may not be.  Skin reactions are totally dilution-dependent, and safety guidelines exist to minimize risk.
        • This is why, LJN advise parents to spray their kids’ clothes rather than their skin.  Especially for younger children who tend to put their hands in their mouths! There are many different guidelines on dilution rates so LJN also advise parents to do their own research and discuss the use of essential oils with their doctor prior to application.  (This applies to anyone using essential oils regardless of their age.)
